WHO WILL WIN: SNEAKERS OR HIGH HEELS?

The year 2020 we sent was catastrophic, apocalyptic, pandemic and absurdly meaningless not only from the point of view of fashion and fashion design, but also from the point of view of our whole life - material and spiritual. Specifically, the fashion industry and fashion were faced with three extremely serious challenges: the overall demotivation of people to "follow fashion" (in standard terms) in the conditions of quarantine and isolation, plus the melting of their income; unprecedented decline in demand and supply of fashion goods; catastrophic collapse in the production of clothing and accessories.

Did the corona crisis affect beauty, style, taste? Taste, real taste, was preserved, but - unfortunately - the tastelessness was spared. The aesthetic gaps and the absence of value criteria for sifting the beautiful from the ugly, the sublime from the low, the beautiful from the vulgar stood out even more. There was a danger that pajamas would become a major factor in home office fashion. Working remotely, people preferred to wear tracksuits, loose sweaters and pajamas. Marketing research on the best-selling clothing online shows that these are the tops, or more - the upper part of our clothing (the one that is from the waist up). Even more important are the accessories - glasses, jewelry, earrings. The combination of a jacket, shirt (with or without a tie), on the one hand, and boxers, or home tracksuits, on the other, is becoming more and more relevant, as the webcam "catches" only the upper part of the men's outfit. Ladies, appearing in Zoom or Teams, began to use T-shirts or simple blouses with fake white collars, which continued to remind of the business dress code from the time of traditional offices.

What will be the style in 2021? What is the future of fashion in the post-like situation? Among the transformation of the style will certainly be the invasion of even more sporty and casual elements in clothing and accessories, the escalation of the "unisex" style, as well as the unprecedented digitalization of fashion design and new forms of its presentation. As the pandemic caused by COVID-19 caused a huge conflict between the formal and the everyday, between the formal and the informal, fashion will also pay its toll on this opposition.

If we think, however, what will be the final of the war between sneakers and high heels, most likely no winner will be announced and the match will end in a draw. In other words, the influence will be mutual, and the result - hybrid, ie. more and more sporty elements will enter the formal wear and footwear and vice versa - both chic and casual elegance will creep into the sportswear even more insistently. This has happened before, but more slowly. The real news is that this process will be greatly accelerated. Just as the influence of sustainable and ethical fashion will be strengthened and accelerated, the role of recycled clothing and the importance of smart textiles and fabrics, for the creation of which nature will be maximally protected. Otherwise, neither the sneakers nor the high heels will die.
