VSCO GIRL: THE INSTAGRAM SUBCULTURE

A new social media term is gaining popularity and describing a way of life. VSCO girl is the latest subculture to emerge from apps like TikTok and Instagram. The name comes from the editing app VSCO, it provides a number of filters to give Instagram posts that dreamy golden tone that VSCO girls love so much.
The term VSCO girl is used to describe teenage girls who dress and behave identically both online and in real life. On Instagram, where the hashtag #VSCOgirl has been used in more than 1 million posts, the aesthetic is mostly a colorful, beachy lifestyle. Some of the photos are of homemade friendship bracelets, while others show young girls posing in nature or in front of graffiti with wings. Environmental advocacy is also a common trait of those who identify with the term.
One of the biggest similarities among VSCO girls is their outfits, which often consist of clothes and accessories from the same brands. They also have a very distinctive look - with very specific accessories, make-up products and fashion brands. Sneakers, including Converse and Vans, are classic footwear choices. Oversized shirts and denim shorts are also popular choices - preferably from brands like Urban Outfitters and Brandy Melville. Other accessories that are included in the VSCO girl style are shell necklaces, colorful friendship bracelets, round sunglasses and lots of hair fringes dyed in the colors of the rainbow.
Classics for this subculture are photos taken during sunset, as well as owning a skateboard. On social media, the VSCO girls promote a more welcoming attitude with accounts filled with inspirational quotes and declarations of good vibes.
