JOSEPH ALTUZARRA - DESIGNER OF LUXURY WOMEN’S CLOTHES
Joseph Altuzarra - the designer we have been following with interest since his first collections, was born in Paris in 1983. He was raised by a mother of Chinese-American descent and a father of French descent. As a child he practiced ballet for 8 years, but then finds his true love - fashion. Joseph holds a bachelor's degree from Swarthmore College with a degree in Art and History of Art. After a while, he travels to New York and interns with the former head of the Rojas Studio, Nicolas Caïto, as well as with Marc Jacobs. After returning to Paris, Altuzarra began working as the first assistant to the creative director of Givenchy, Riccardo Tisci.
The 25-year-old French designer created his own brand in 2008. A year later, New York Fashion Week showcased his first collection. Since then he has been one of the favourites of all stylists and fashion editors.
Hand stitches and cut trousers immediately convey Joseph's style, and his interest in female body shapes cleverly makes his way to the wardrobes of stars like Kim Kardashian, Angelina Jolie, Rihanna, Cate Blanchett and Meghan Markle. However, the designer not only creates clothes for celebrities, but also designs clothes for ordinary women to feel confident and sexy in their everyday lives. "We dress women who have a real life - those who have to go to work or those who have to go to dinner after work. This means fewer dresses that are 'worn' on Instagram, and more blouses and coloured suits that can be worn anywhere, anytime, "Altuzarra said.
For a talented designer, creating the best product possible is more important than creating it quickly. "We always take our time, like for the latest Altuzarra bag. It took us two and a half years to design it, and even though the sales team wanted to release it, we said no because I wanted to keep working on it and testing it until I felt it was ready to launch on the market, "says Joseph.
In 2011, he won the highly regarded CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund Award, and three years later received the CFDA Designer of the Year Award for women's apparel. To create his elegant collections, the designer draws inspiration from his multicultural background, and his new Fall / Winter 2019-2020 collection is dedicated to rock bands. The dominant element in it is leather, but it also lacks the glamorous charm of the 80s - years with lamas, metallic colours and sequins.
